This even is held on the 3rd Sunday in September of each year.

Come join all your former neighbors and friends for a day of fellowship, food and fun. Bring food and drinks, utensils furnished.

October Sky Festival

50 years sputnick
9th Annual October Sky Festival will be from 10am to 5PM with opening cermony on the Methodist Church steps at 10AM. The festivities will be centered around the Club House again this year. There will be games, live music, vendors, foo and small carnival rides. The festival is getting better and "bigger" each year.
The activities will be spread all over Coalwood, staring at the Country Corner, from the Club House, to Cassell Park to Cape Coalwood.
There will be special T-shirts and caps as well as other souvenirs for sale. Bring lots of cash and have fun!
The "Rocket Boys" will be signing books on the Club House porch.

Annual Rocket Boys Day
** The last West Virginia Rockt Boys Day was held on June 30, 2001. Because of the recent flooding, the people have decided to combined this even with the October Sky Festival in order to continue the clean up.
It is always a great pleasure to visit Coalwood.
This day has come and gone, but the memories will last forever.

Ok here is the latest for this years event
Along with homer and all the rocket boys .there will be a special guest
shuttle astronaut BILL READDY .He will be signing autographs and talking to everyone .he is a veteran of 3 space flights and has logged over 672 hours in space.
Another special guest SCOTT MILES. who played Jim Hickam in the movie October Sky.will be around all day
Jay Chapman will have a display of coalfield memorabilia on display .this will be set up beside the fire department.
Inside the fire department Kathleen Frank will be showing a power point presentation E-mission Moon Mars and beyond
There will be several authors selling books including myself and Mr Schust.
There will be lots of vendors and games for the kids .rockets being launched at the cape.
This year is very special .It is the 50th anniversary of the Russian sputnik
space program .On October 5th 1957 Homer watched it go over coalwood and his dream was formed
to help celebrate this event . NASA ,Rsa and the laws of physics have agreed to fly the International Space Station over Coalwood .If the sky's are clear .you should see it on Oct.4 at 7:32PM,Oct 5 at 7:53 PM and Oct.6 at 8:18 PM. now just how cool is that !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I and all the people of Coalwood invite you to come spend the day with us .Enjoy all the things going on .Dance in front of the club house .Music will be provided by several local artist Delbert Kister,Jon Wikstorm,Joe Ford .Penny Justice ,Brock Whitt just to mention a few
this is expected to be the biggest festival yet .You will hate yourself if you miss this years fun .SEE YA-ALL THERE !!!
