George Lafayette Carter was born in Hillsville, VA on January 10, 1857 and died Wednsday evening, December 30, 1936. At the of age16 Mr. Carter began his first job as a clerk in Johnson's General Store in Hillsville. In 1877, Carter was employed by the Wythe Lead Mine Company. In time Carter bougnt and sold this operation .
This was the start of his empire.
